A Note On Banning Books

I think those who are for and against banning books can agree on one thing: indoctrinating kids is bad. However, those in favor of banning are more likely to indoctrinate.

If you enter a library and read ten million books, it's very unlikely that a small collection of books could shift your entire worldview. It's when we limit what people can read that we actually force them to think a certain way.

One book is simply one account of one person from history. Investigating these perspectives is in the common core standards we've been using in schools for decades. A middle school social studies standard, for instance, requires that students analyze an historical event through peoples' perspectives living at the time.

Standards are in place for a reason. Educators must ensure their curriculum covers all standards.

A Note About Statues: Hypocrisy also exists among those who are against banning books but in favor of destroying statues. Statues are an historical perspective of people living at the time and should serve, like any historical artifact, to inform future generations of a world before.
